What does this sign say to you?

I think I understand what is trying to be said here. But I wonder, is what is being said the same as what is being read? What does this say to you?

I think it SAYS: We do things the old fashioned way - none of that new-fangled, rock and roll, and a lot of fire and brimstone!! The OLD WAY! I think what they are TRYING to say is that we are TRADITIONAL - but sometimes tradition gets lost and takes people down with it - the MESSAGE of the Gospel doesn't change - but its mode of DELIVERY does - we don't walk two by two, mooch off of folks for bed and board, and have our feet washed by servants anymore - but we still preach the same message....

Funny thing...I passed this sign a couple of Wednesdays ago as I was taking the teens home from church. I just happened to read it aloud and I heard one teen say, "old fashioned? No Thank You!!" I guess I was kinda thinking the same thing..hmmmm ~Jaye

I get what you are saying about the "old fashioned, no thank you" to the judgmental and stuffy kind of church, however, and perhaps this is a result of the west coast influence or just the urban influence, but the churches in my area could use a little bit of old fashioned something or other. What is apparent to me, is that the churches in my neighborhood (including the one I belong to) have become more concerned with trends, being hip and glossing over the message of Christ and in the end are essentially losing the message. My hope is that we could come to a point where Jesus truly is the only thing that matters -- not how tight our worship band sounds, not how glossy our multimedia presentation is, and not how many hip phrases we can throw into our sermon this week. Anyway, this is just a critique of the churches on just about every corner here in Phoenix . . . .

I guess it depends on what experiences you had with church. It made me think of no holds bar preaching of the truth without worry of offending someone, singing as long as the Spirit leads and people leaving the service changed for the better whether recently saved or just closer to God.

Tina - I like what you are saying. And I think the last part is not dependent upon style - old fashioned or new - it is dependent upon whether the Bible and the truths of God are being disseminated instead of whatever the latest trends in Christianity are. Now, I'm not saying that some of those trends are bad in and of themselves, but to build our churches with those philosophies and trends and commercial appeal in the forefront, in my opinion, does a disservice to the beauty of the scriptures and to the life and work of Christ.

I don't think that putting that on a sign is a positive thing. My beef with the "give me that old time religion" gig, is that the "old timers" expect the new timers to come to Jesus the way that they did. They won't change for anything. Then the atmosphere of the church is dealt a huge blow. When tradition is done for traditions sake it is a disservice to everything Jesus stood for. Also, when change is done for change sake the same thing applies.
I am not saying that every church needs to have a "tight" band or a slick sermon. However, we should do whatever it takes to get the Gospel to as many people as possible without water it down or changing it. Have a great band or a modern sermon doesnt change the message in my mind, it enhances it.

It says, "We have no intentions of growing in our faith." Just kidding!

Sarah, I don't disagree with you.

To me the sign says "No one under the age of 75 attends here." as well as "Our preacher shouts from the pulpit at you."

Just as an aside to Kristin about the preacher shouting at you! I preached a few Sundays ago about Jesus' temptation in the desert, and Satan trying to beguile him - and I talked about Satan in the world, and how the devil works! (Nobody works harder) - I also said I don't preach much about the devil, cuz folks like the warm, fuzzy lovey-dovey sermons - not the uncomfortable ones - but after that service, several folks came and said they LIKED the "old-time" pulpit pounding, hellfire and brimstone sermons!! :) Hmmmmm......
